Composed for a student whose favorite composers were Gershwin and Brahms, I have tried to capture elements of each in this suite. The first movement features an up-tempo syncopated melody in the clarinet with a percussive, staccato piano accompaniment pushing towards a big finish. The second movement begins with a low and brooding melody, then goes into a sassy, swing section before returning to the quiet opening melody. The final movement is a straight-ahead, fast boogie; as fun to perform as it is to hear.
