Text: Poem by Jennifer Armstrong
When death comes to close my eyes
memories of small things will help me go
Grand moments may help us live
but they won’t help us die
Everyday pleasures will count the most in the end
The delight of beans unfurling from the earth stretching new, green leaves into the hot
summer air
The wind on my face and my hair
biking around the crest of a curving hill
A long, cool drink of water over dry, thirsty lips
The laughter shared at my daughter’s graduation when I felt around my chair for a seatbelt
The sound of the rain on the front porch roof
All of us counting the seconds between thunder and lightning
The feel of my lover’s hand in mine and
the easy stride
we shared walking side by side
The smile at the end of a long hard day
when body and mind are so tired and so satisfied falling into bed is pure heaven
That is the smile I want to wear
when death comes to close my eyes
